The founder and CEO of Medweb, Dr. Peter “Pete” Killcommons is a philanthropist who has traveled to remote villages around the world to administer medical advice and counseling. Dr. Peter Killcommons established Medweb to allow telemedicine services to reach these remote locations.

Medweb has been designed to provide modern imaging technology to remote areas with its patented medical image distribution program. The RIS/PACS modules integrate patient scheduling and registration with HIPAA-compliant storage and patient billing for a more seamless medical process. This helps medical personnel spend more time focusing on patient care.

Medweb’s telemedicine solutions allow physicians to consult with each other on a secured network and share uploaded images and findings. The system includes a comprehensive training program to teach physicians and medical personnel how to use the system efficiently, saving time and money for both medical staff and patients. Medical specialties covered include dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology, and radiology.

As founder and CEO of Medweb in San Francisco, Peter “Pete” Killcommons guides his company in providing telemedicine and imaging services; his firm is one of the few corporations that include a dedicated philanthropic division. Among the recipients of Peter Killcommons’ charity projects are disaster sites in the United States and abroad.

Southwest Asia has been a focal point for several Medweb initiatives. In Afghanistan, Medweb installed and provided training for a deployable telemedicine clinic. This clinic enables doctors and patients in separate locations to communicate via voice and visual links. Medweb also improved satellite communications at a lab in Jalalabad.

Medweb also served Tristan de Cunha, a remote island west of South Africa that can only be reached by a weeklong boat trip. The company enhanced telemedicine capabilities and continues to provide technical support and training there.

In the US, Medweb aided victims of Hurricane Katrina with a mobile medical triage unit on the ground at Touro Hospital and on board the USNS Comfort.

Telemedicine Brings Doctors and Patients Together

Picture
Dr. Peter Killcommons is the founder and CEO of Medweb, a California-based company that develops telemedical systems, helping to join doctors with patients who are not in the same location. As both a surgeon and philanthropist, Dr. Peter (Pete) Killcommons has participated for over 20 years in the evolution of telemedicine, which has seen rapid development over that time with the advent of the Internet and other modern communications technologies.

In addition to allowing doctors to apply their skills and expertise to patients beyond easy reach, such as those from rural communities, telemedicine can accelerate the medical examination process for patients in any circumstances. Cameras and other remotely operated devices, in combination with powerful encryption and network-connection tools, can allow doctors to study scanned images and diagnose patients across an electronic connection with the same accuracy as a personal examination. This not only helps to preserve hospital access and resources for emergencies, it allows doctors to be better prepared for a patient’s arrival on such an occasion and begin administering treatment sooner.

U.S. military medics particularly appreciate this aspect of the technology, since it allows them to examine a patient and transmit detailed information on the nature of an injury ahead of evacuation. This is far preferable to the previous method of simply filling out a card and tying it to the patient with a wire.

The possibility of being able to treat patients remotely is significant in other scenarios as well. NASA has long considered the possibility of an astronaut becoming injured or ill, and the agency being unable to abort the mission and return to Earth in time for treatment. At present, NASA is interested in the many applications of ultrasound technology for the crew of the International Space Station. This is because ultrasound can provide detailed tissue scans of patients, and it has been successfully used during the treatment of certain conditions like internal bleeding, potentially preventing death from a traumatic injury.

Today we are chatting with Peter Killcommons, an expert in the field of implementing telemedicine solutions, especially in rural or challenging environments such as Afghanistan.

Q: What are some of the main challenges of using telemedicine in rural areas?
A: The most basic challenge is to have a platform for communication to exist. This means reliable and reasonably affordable internet access in the area. Without a convenient way to communicate back and forth, patients need to travel either to a larger town or directly to a healthcare facility, which defeats the purpose of telemedicine.

Q: How can telemedicine operate in such areas in the long term?
A: One persistent challenge is finding ways to train local physicians on how to use the technology properly. Many western nations are supporting telemedicine initiatives in the developing world, but there can be challenges once they set the system up and leave an area. Without some supervision and proper training, the telemedicine might not be adopted quickly enough to gain widespread acceptance. Telemedicine cannot simply replace the current area’s healthcare system; it needs to be complementary and implemented slowly so that all the kinks can be worked out.

Holding an MD from New York Medical College, Dr. Peter (Pete) Killcommons has amassed over three decades of experience as a medical practitioner. As the founding CEO of San Francisco-based Medweb, Dr. Peter Killcommons spearheads the delivery of telemedicine and teleradiology technologies, often leveraging mobile medical solutions to expand healthcare access in remote and developing communities.

Since its founding in 1992, Medweb has brought telehealth technology to such countries as Malaysia, Antigua, and Pakistan. The company has also aided disaster relief efforts following tragedies like Hurricane Katrina.

Most recently, Mebweb worked to fill a pressing need for specialized medical care in Kosovo, where rural communities lack convenient access to specialty consultations. Partnering with Rotary Clubs from Gjakova, Kosovo, and Edwards, Colorado, and with additional support from Rotary International, Medweb facilitated the installation of digital healthcare tools in rural Gjakova communities. By providing computers and telecommunications equipment to family medical centers throughout the region, Medweb and Rotary Club helped to link existing primary care providers with secondary and tertiary healthcare networks, allowing patients to seek medical care for a wider, more specialized range of health concerns.

For the past two decades Peter Killcommons has served as Chief Executive Officer of Medweb, a San Francisco firm that offers innovative teleradiology, telemedicine, and medical imaging solutions. In August 2012, Medweb notably tested its lifesaving mobile health technologies at the Research and Experimentation for Local and International Emergency and First Responders (RELIEF) event. This four day program is held annually at Marine Corps’ Camp Roberts in Paso Robles, California.

Co-hosted by the Naval Postgraduate School and the National Defense University, the RELIEF event enabled Medweb to perform testing of its field-deployable digital exam kit and integrated mobile-based patient registration system in an operational setting. The portable device and integrated software are vital for first responders to effectively identify, track, and triage patients in emergency situations. This end-to-end casualty tracking system eases the distinct challenges faced by emergency caregivers throughout the process of transferring victims from point-of-casualty to tertiary care facilities.

The RELIEF event presented an ideal opportunity for Peter Killcommons and his team to build relationships with active-duty military personnel and practitioners in a collaborative, educational setting.

An acknowledged leader in telemedicine, Dr. Peter “Pete” Killcommons is founder and CEO of Medweb. Under Dr. Peter Killcommons' direction, the company provides distance care solutions for physicians in numerous specialties, including stroke care.

Telestroke, a Medweb product, helps patients in remote locations gain access to expert stroke care. The system allows practitioners in community and remote hospitals to communicate with specially trained personnel. A user-friendly interface connects with existing videoconferencing technology to allow practitioners to record and share radiologic imaging, stroke scale results, and other relevant data.

More than a simple information delivery system, Telestroke offers templates that prompt practitioners as to what information is necessary to develop a complete diagnoses. In addition, the system supports the creation of comprehensive care plans that include advanced therapies and treatment for diagnoses unrelated to stroke. All information transmits securely and efficiently thanks to a built-in digital imaging and communications (DICOM) engine that communicates between medical centers' picture archival and communications systems (PACS).
