The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is part of the United States Department of Homeland Security and serves the people of the United States by offering disaster preparedness information and recovery systems. FEMA assists local municipalities as they respond to natural occurrences that affect large geographic areas and populations of people, as well as emergencies that occur within exclusively federal jurisdictions.

Before a major event occurs, citizens can visit FEMA.gov to access emergency preparation resources, including information on how to survive a tornado, earthquake, fire, or flood, among other devastating events. It also provides survival supply lists and extensive information about a number of unforeseen circumstances.

When a disaster occurs, FEMA provides immediate assistance of food and water. Once the safety and security of citizens within the disaster area is ensured, FEMA helps with the rebuilding process. The agency offers counseling, legal advice, insurance information, and a number of other monetary resources in order to ease the burden and stress on individuals.

During the most recent natural disaster, Hurricane Irene, FEMA readied trucks with meals, water, and blankets along the East Coast of the United States. After the storm passed, the agency continued to provide support and helped flooded areas return to normalcy.

On constant watch to ensure that emergencies have the smallest possible impact on the American people, FEMA greatly appreciates donations of funding and supplies and encourages people to volunteer.

The CEO of San Francisco, California-based Medweb, Peter (Pete) Killcommons oversees the company’s radiology, telemedicine, and disaster response operations. A pioneer in web-based radiology, Peter Killcommons is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA).

For the 2016 AMA Medical Education Innovation Challenge, medical students across the country were challenged to re-imagine the medical schools of the future. Among those awarded were Carol Platt and Nicole Paprocki, two second-year medical students from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM), who came up with a project that took medical education out of lecture halls and into communities in underserved areas.

On a mission to build relationships between medical students and their communities as well as to inspire the future generation of medical students, the two organized various outreach programs to schools in Chicago and Indiana, where medical students gave free hands-on medical lessons.

One of the beneficiaries of these outreach programs was the 21st Century Charter School in Gary, Indiana. Here, 120 students from grades seven and eight received practical lessons on radiology. Medical students taught the students how X-rays were used to see the skeleton inside the body and spot bone fractures. In subsequent lessons, students learned how to wrap bandages, perform CPR, and check each other’s vital signs.

Outside of his work as a CEO, Peter (Pete) Killcommons is active in a number of charities. One of the organizations that Peter Killcommons supports is Fisher House Foundation.

The primary mission of Fisher House Foundation is making available homes for the families of American military service members and veterans to stay while their loved ones are undergoing medical treatment nearby. The foundation maintains a network of homes, which are located near VA medical centers and major military hospitals. The foundation services approximately 848 families a day.

While best known for its comfort homes, Fisher House Foundation has a number of other programs to help military service members and their families. One of these is the scholarship program it runs along with Newman’s Own and the Gannett Government Media Corporation.

These scholarships provide a total of $200,000 annually to organizations and individuals that come up with creative ways to enhance the quality of life for military families. The basic idea is that because military families face unique challenges, innovative solutions must be found. For example, in 2015, a Los Angeles nonprofit organization called Operation Mend received $50,000 for its ongoing work building connections between military families in need and surgical and medical professionals at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The founder and CEO of www.medweb.com, Peter Killcommons has created innovative telemedicine platforms that have been used in remote areas in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as in various United States military projects. Peter Killcommons supports a number of organizations dedicated to military service members, including the Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit that provides free or low-cost lodging to veterans and their families while they are receiving medical treatment.

Among the Fisher House Foundation’s various assistance programs is Hero Miles, a program that allows individual airline passengers to donate their frequent flyer miles. The program utilizes the miles to purchase round-trip airline tickets for wounded and ill service members who are undergoing treatment at a VA or military medical center, or those who are attending an authorized event.

Tickets may also be given to close friends and family members who are visiting military patients at authorized medical centers. The Hero Miles program works in partnership with major airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Airlines, US Airways, and United Airlines. Since its creation in 2005, the program has helped more than 46,000 wounded and ill service members and their families.
