The primary mission of Fisher House Foundation is making available homes for the families of American military service members and veterans to stay while their loved ones are undergoing medical treatment nearby. The foundation maintains a network of homes, which are located near VA medical centers and major military hospitals. The foundation services approximately 848 families a day.
While best known for its comfort homes, Fisher House Foundation has a number of other programs to help military service members and their families. One of these is the scholarship program it runs along with Newman’s Own and the Gannett Government Media Corporation.
These scholarships provide a total of $200,000 annually to organizations and individuals that come up with creative ways to enhance the quality of life for military families. The basic idea is that because military families face unique challenges, innovative solutions must be found. For example, in 2015, a Los Angeles nonprofit organization called Operation Mend received $50,000 for its ongoing work building connections between military families in need and surgical and medical professionals at the University of California, Los Angeles.
